Description: | Medieval copper-alloy strap end. The strap-end is made up of double sheets, with a front plate with bent sides and seperate back. To the hollow end (the end which was directly attached to the leather) are two rivets which would have held the strap-end to the leather belt. The strap-end is 72mm in lenght, at hollow end it is 36mm wide tapering to 26mm. The front plate has incised decoration round the outer edge with a legend, this incription is in latin 'AVE MARIA CRACIA PLENA' translating to 'Hail Mary Full of Grace'. The Strap-end is also enameled with gold both on the back and front.
