Description: | A copper-alloy trade weight with London marks which were in use between 1590-1826 (Biggs 1992, 50-51). This weight is circular in shape and measures 19.7mm in diameter it weighs 6.84g. The marks on the front face of this weight include the sword, which is the city of London mark; the sword of St Paul, which is at roughly 12 O'clock and the ewer. which is the mark of the London founders company empowered to verify 'brass' weights, which is roughly at 7 O'clock. There is another worn mark opposite the ewer at 5 O'clock but it is no longer clear, this may have originally been the letter A for Averdepois, or possibly a royal cypher. As this mark is unclear this trade weight cannot be dated any more precisely. | Subjects: | trade | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | Minter, Faye - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
