Description: | A medieval seal matrix, 13th or early 14th century. It is 28mm in width at its widest point, 40mm in length and is of a ??pointed oval?? type with a central rib on the reverse. The design is of the Virgin and Child seated beneath a canopy and the legend reads ??AVE MARIA GRA PLENA DOMS SD?? following a cross patt??e initial mark. The inscription is taken from the opening words of the Hail Mary, a very common legend on medieval seals (see for example Tonnochy, A. B. 1952. Catalogue of British Seal-Dies in the British Museum, page 196, nos. 906-908). This seal is notable for the ??silvered?? texture on the reverse.
