Description: | Post Medieval copper alloy buckle plate. The folded copper alloy sheet has a looped end to hold the strap bar of the buckle frame. There is a central, rectangular slot in this loop to accommodate the buckle pin. The front of the plate is rectangular, with a recess to either side of the loop to alloy movement of the buckle frame. The back plate is narrower, with no need for recesses for the frame. There are two rivet holes on the outer edge of the plate, one still containing the partial remains of a copper alloy rivet. The upper surface is decorated with a geometric design. There is a raised outline of a square with a double lined quarter circle in each of the internal corners. Above and below this square is a narrow, raised zig-zag line. The brooch has a dull red-brown patina, and a small amount of gilt can be seen adhering to the surface around the rivet. The plate is 20.05mm long, 26.62mm wide and 5.15mm thick. The copper alloy sheet is 0.8mm thick. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | McLean, Laura - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
