Description: | Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper alloy strap end, of Thomas class A, type 2. The strap end is incomplete, with only the lower section of the split end surviving. The strap end is sub-rectangular in plan, and rectangular in profile, increasing in thickness towards the terminal. There are two circular rivet holes at the attachement end. The upper surface is decorated in a geometric pattern comprised of two outlined sub-lozenge shaped, each contained within a circle. There is triangular decoration below. The geometric design is contained within a raised border. The fields between the geometric shaped are filled with raised dots. The terminal end of the strap end is worn, and would have depicted a stylised animal head. The 'ears' are still visible, as are two angular grooves, one to each side of the strap end, which would have represented the eyes. The reverse of the strap end is smooth and undecorated. The surface is slightly worn, particularly at the terminal and the attachment end. The rivet holes also show signs of wear, however no trace of the rivets survive. The artefact has an even mid-green patina. It is 45.99mm long, measures 12.35mm across the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 2.62mm and weighs 4.72 grams. Anglo-Saxon strap ends date from 740-1100AD, peaking in the 9th century. It is likely that this example is of 9th century date. | Subjects: | Thomas Class A Type 2 | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | McLean, Laura - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
