Description: | An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval seal matrix of conical form (c. 14th century AD). The handle is severely truncated as a result of old damage; much of the stem has been lost in addition to the suspension loop. It is hexagonally faceted with the facets worn smooth through wear and some corrosion. The circular die features a Lamb of God sitting right in intaglio (facing left on the seal). The lamb (Agnus Dei) has a raised head looking at a staff. The lamb's legs are folded under him, taken to represent genuflection. A four-tailed banner flies from the staff. The top of the staff extends into the lettering area, and forms the cross which opens the legend, whilst the base is obscured by the lamb's back. The Lombardic legend is fairly crudely rendered. It reads '+ ECCE AGNVS DE.', which seems to be an alternative rendering to the more common 'DEI' (cf. Read 2001, 74; ref. 594 for similar). The artefact has corroded to a dark grey-green colour. Inscription: + ECCE AGNVS DE. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | Webley, Robert - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
