Description: | An early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) 6th-century mount. This incomplete mount was cast in copper alloy and the upper surface was gilded. The surviving section is 29.83mm long, 15.15mm wide reducing to 12.19mm across the main body, and has a thickness of 2.87mm.
The mount is rectangular, with a worn break at each of the shorter ends. There is a curved projection extending from one of the long edges, which is flanked by a sub-circular knob on each side. One break is immediately next to this projection. The projection is 14.64mm long and 3.95mm wide. It is decorated with two moulded narrow and curved lines. The two knobs are not identical in their decoration. The left knob has a circular indentation, while the one to the right (next to the worn break) is decorated with raised moulded lines.
The main rectangular body of the mount has a raised border (approximately 1.5mm thick) immediately below the curved projection. There is then a wide decorative band, approximately 7.5mm thick, filled with style 1 animal art. At least two animals (possibly three) are represented on the existing section of the mount. All descriptions relating to the animal art are in relief. Running from left to right (with the curved projection at the top) there is a curved animal leg which tapers at the end, with four (possibly five) feathered toes extending from it. The next section of the mount is comprised of an animal body, formed of three vertical lines, with three curved lines below extending to the right of the vertical lines, forming a shallow sideways 'S' shape. Immediately to the right of the body is another leg, this time with only two toes visible. The leg is at a different angle to the first one seen on the mount. To the right of the leg is a copper alloy circular rivet which obscures some of the design detail. Two vertical lines are immediately below the rivet, and there appears to be a vertical and curved line to the left and a curved groove to the right. To the right of the decoration surrounding the rivet is three vertical lines, with the base of a leg forming below. This leg extends to the right, curving around and tapering off with three toes visible on the inside edge. This leg is at the same orientation as the second leg on the mount. A small amount of raised decoration can be seen to the right of this leg, but what it represents is undetermined due to the worn break. Below this zone of animal art is a raised border of 1.5mm thick, then there is a depressed line before another raised border of 1mm thickness.
The upper surface has a large amount of gilt adhering to the surface, with the raised animal art and borders being the main areas where the gilt is missing. Areas where the copper alloy is exposed have a dark green-black patina, and slight pitting in the surface is visible. The copper alloy rivet has a slightly lighter green patina. Part of the rivet extends from the reverse of the mount. There is a band of red-brown iron corrosion adhering to the reverse if the mount immediately above and below the rivet. The reverse of the mount has a further patch of corrosion, forming a roughly circular shape, however there is no rivet hole or other means of attachment present at this point. The rivet is positioned below the curved projection within the band of animal art. However, the rivet is not centrally aligned with either the zoomorphic band or the projection - it is slightly to the left of the centre of the projection. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | McLean, Laura - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
