Description: | A damaged and incomplete late medieval cast copper-alloy purse bar. The surviving elements consitute the loop, with its shank and rove, and the bars to varying levels of completeness - the more complete with one extant attachment plate. The loop is sub-oval having been bent; it is 25.95mm at its widest. The junction of loop and shank has a circular cross-section and is 6.75mm in diameter. The shank and rove are of similar cross-section. The shank, mostly obscured by the central block which retains it, is 4.3mm in diameter. The globular rove is up to 9.95mm in diameter.
The central block is shield shaped with a flattened top and base. It features a central longitudinal perforation for the shank which is recessed at both top and base. The block measures 17.2 by 16.75 by 10.2mm. It is decorated bifacially with incised lettering inlaid with niello. On one face is the initial 'W', a common letter on purse bars (Ward Perkins 1940, 164). On the other face is the 'IhS' monogram (see Notes, below).
Emerging from either side of the central block is a junction element, 8.4 by 10.65 by 7.3mm. From these elements emerge the arms, both curved round as a result of old damage. One arm is broken after only 10.6mm; the other extends for c. 32.2mm before a break. The longer of the arms features a semi-circular attachment plate (L.: 10.9mm), beginning 11.55mm from the junction. On the faces of the arms either side of the 'IhS' monogram are the incised letters '...A/GACIA...' These derive from the common inscription 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA' ('Hail Mary full of grace'), with the 'Gracia' mis-spelt (see WILT-76B1D0 on this database for the same error). On the other face, to the left of the 'W', with the loop uppermost, is the legend '...OMINV...'. This is part of the companion 'DOMINUS TECUM' legend ('The Lord is with you/thee') common on purse bars of the Ward Perkins Type A2 (see also Read 2001, 128, 131; ref. 911). The artefact has corroded to a patchy mid-dark green colour.
