Description: | A cast copper alloy pilgrim badge, in the form of a button.
It is formed from a flat, circular plate of copper alloy, with an iron attachment loop cast into the centre of the reverse. The front of the badge has an incised circular border and an incised image. The image is of St Roche, who comes from Montpelier in France. The saint was himself a pilgrim, as depicted by his clothing. He wears a flowing and long tunic and a large rounded head dress. He carries a shaft in the left hand, which has a string of beads daggling from it. The shaft has a rounded top. He suffered from a sore on the upper leg, which he is exposing, and he had a companion dog which was apt to lick the wound (a comfort of a kind). He is of course a patron of those with stubborn, unhealing wounds and apparently untreatable sores. The dog is on the left side of the man and is jumping up at him. There is an attendant angel, who represents a supplicant on his right side. There is a banner above the angel which reads SROC, for his name.
It is only the second known British example even recorded in Britain for St Roche. The other example was recorded found in South Petherton (Somerset). See SOMDOR905 ?? this example is completely different in form. This example is published in the PAS Annual Report 1999/2000, p42.
It is probably late 15th - early 16th Century in date. | Subjects: | Pilgrim | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | Andrews-Wilson, Liz - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
