Description: | Cast cu-alloy strap end dating from the Medieval period, i.e. c. AD1300-1500. Only half of the buckle frame, the pin and the buckle plate survive. The pin is quite short which suggests a narrow oval buckle. The pin was attached to the spindle by simply curling the terminal around it. The spacer bars (if the buckle had any) are not visible; they are hidden by the obverse and reverse of the sheet of the buckle plate. The sheet metal is very thin and was also wrapped around the spindle, leaving a perforation for the pin to sit in. The metal plate was attached to the leather belt or strap with two rivets which are still clearly visible. The reverse of the sheet is plain, but the obverse bears a very crude incised decoration: a crude frame and possibly lettering all around the outer edge. This incription is probably Latin and was meant to read 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA' translating to 'Hail Mary Full of Grace'. The lettering is not clear and the only letters legible are some 'A's and 'E's. However, spelling errors were very common in simple inscriptions of that time. The letters combined are a talismanic inscription which can also be found on some buckles and purse bars dating from the same period. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | Boughton, Dot - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
