Description: | Treasure case 2006 T147 is two coins that were found fused together. They are detailed in two separate records that are linked below. This record is for coin 1.
British Museum Report:
"Circumstances of Discovery
These two coins were reported in early 2006. They were found in October 2005, on farmland in West Yorkshire, by a metal detectorist
The coins
Both coins detailed here are Roman silver denarii struck by the junior emperor Caracalla (AD198-217).
The coins are:
1. Silver denarius (weight 3.03g; diameter 19.11mm)
Obverse: ANTONINVSPIVS AVG BRIT; Laureate head facing right
Reverse: PONTIF TR P [XI to XIIII] COS III
Struck: AD208-211 (Rome)
2. Silver denarius (weight 3.29g; diameter 19.52mm)
Obverse: IMP CAES M AVR ANTON AVG; Laureate and draped bust facing right
Reverse: IVVENTA IMPERII
Struck: AD199 (Rome)
Caracalla was the son of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus who died at York in AD211, whilst on Campaign in Northern Britain. Severus was accompanied to Britain by Caracalla and his younger son Geta. Both coins were produced shortly before Caracalla became emperor in his own right (AD211).
Date and Metal Content
The coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to age and metal content. They are certainly more than 300 years old and all have precious metal contents far in excess of the 10% threshold.
Of the same find?
The two coins were said to have been fused together when found, so can be considered beyond any doubt to have been buried together in antiquity.
Conclusion
I conclude that this find constitutes a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996)."
