Description: | Medieval (14th Century) copper alloy composite strap end. It has two circular plates with a rectangular arm at the attachment end. The upper plate is decorated with an incised cross-hatch design, with a rectangular openwork sheet along its length. The openwork plate has a rectangular cut out with a trefoil design at the apex, to form an archway around a standing figure. The figure is wearing a floor length garment. Part of the right hand side of this plate is missing, as are the figures arms. The reverse is plain and undecorated. All three plates are held together by copper alloy rivets ?? one at the attachment end, and two at the base of the strap end. The back and middle plate have a sub-rectangular terminal knop, with a copper alloy rivet through the middle. There is a worn break across all three plates at the attachment end. The strap end is 42.33mm long and has a diameter of 22.37mm. The attachment end is 11.83mm wide, 6.27mm thick, and the terminal knop is 5.44mm wide, 4.21mm thick. The openwork plate is 30.89mm long and 11.37mm wide. It weighs 9.59 grams. The strap end has a mid to dark green patina. The surface is slightly worn and the edges damaged. There is some corrosion surrounding the openwork plate and on the reverse of the strap end. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | McLean, Laura - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
