Description: | Possibly a post medieval or modern (1700-1900AD) cast pewter whistle. The artefact is is tubular with an oval cross section. The internal space divided in two; the main tube is circular, with an internal diameter of 9.22mm, with the upper tube being sub-triangular, measuring 4.88mm wide, 2.56mm high. This upper tube is now filled with soil. It tapers slightly towards one end (possibly the mouth piece), which has a worn break across it. There is a small integrally cast suspension loop on the upper surface measuring 7.25mm wide, 4.99mm thick with an internal diameter of 2.94mm. The surface of the artefact is covered in moulded decoration. The upper surface has the suspension loop, a central triangular projection with a worn floral design (measuring 17.27mm long, 6.41mm high), and a smaller triangular projection (6.47mm long, 4.31mm high) just before the terminal. The lower surface has a raised rectangular panel (34.47mm long, 9.15mm wide), containing a sub-rectangular projection (12.84mm long, 4.75mm wide) and a stepped projection formed of an oval base, rectangle and central circular knop (9.67mm long, 6.62mm wide). To either side of this main panel is a depressed area (2.78mm wide) containing vertical lines. Extending from the end of the main rectangular panel towards the narrowed terminal is a leaf-shaped moulding, with three lobes on each side. The two sides have a raised rectangular panel in alignment with that on the lower surface. These panels originally had some form of moulding, but are now extremely worn. The remaining surfaces are covered in raised bands, which extend around the circumference of the main body. The surface is quite worn, and it is a grey-cream in colour. It is 72.88mm long, has a maximum width of 27.62mm and a maximum thickness of 15.41mm. It weighs 52.22 grams. | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Creator: | McLean, Laura - Portable Antiquities Scheme | Identifier: | http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
