Description: | Medieval castle built as a motte by 1086. In the 12th century a stone keep was added, 13th century buildings include towers, the curtain wall and gatehouse. Repairs were carried out during the 15th century. The castle was repaired again after being captured by Parliamentary forces in 1646 during the Civil War. During World War Two the Air Ministry occupied huts erected on the castle green (now demolished). There is also evidence for Iron Age Occupation.
