Description: | The knotted rope round the neck of the priest depicted in this painting identifies him as Saint Charles Borromeo, a patron saint of Milan. Born into a noble Milanese family, Charles Borromeo was archbishop of his native city in the second half of the sixteenth century. He was canonised in 1610. He is represented praying and embracing a crucifix before an altar, with scenes from his life in the background.
