Description: | The object of co-operatives is for people to form voluntary associations in order to work together to further their own economic and social interests. The examples best known today are probably the Co-op chain of supermarkets and Co-op funeral directors. In addition to these commercial activities, co-ops have always had a strong political dimension. This display is promoting a number of campaigns supported by co-ops. The political arm of Co-operation is the Co-operative Party, founded in 1917. An alliance between the Co-op and Labour Parties was formed in 1927 and still exists today. Co-ops have historically supported a number of causes such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the movement against the Vietnam War, and campaigns for solidarity with strikers. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ | Publisher: | Bishopsgate Institute | Rights holder: | Bishopsgate Institute | Subjects: | Power and Politics | Temporal: | c1975 | Source: | Bishopsgate Institute | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Go to resource |
