Description: | A tuba suitable for brass band, military band or orchestral performance made by the Yamaha Corporation, Japan. From the 1980s onwards, the manufacture of brass and woodwind instruments in London faced growing competition from Asian imports. Companies such as Yamaha initially focussed on the student instrument market but gradually expanded their operations to include higher specification models. The result was that mass production of musical instruments in the capital effectively ceased. By the end of the century, almost every form of music making in London had been influenced by this change, with imported instruments, such as this tuba, appearing in both amateur ensembles like school and brass bands and professional groups such as military bands and orchestras. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ | Publisher: | Horniman Museum and Gardens | Rights holder: | Horniman Museum, London | Subjects: | work Leisure | Temporal: | 1993 | Source: | Horniman Museum | Identifier: | http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/rser... | Go to resource |
