Description: Pale buff earthenware. Tin-glazed off-white on the exterior; inside of neck clear-glazed; base unglazed. The glaze is extremely shiny and, where thin, has a pinkish tone. There are patches of grey discolouration on the front and handle. Painted in dark inky-blue which has run, pale yellow, and very dark manganese-brown.
Bulbous ovoid body with short cylindrical neck, spout projecting upwards from the shoulder, and strap handle.
On the front, within a circular `ladder' frame, is a shield of testa di cavallo form, charged with the arms argent a fess sable between a crescent azure and a moor's head azure, flanked by wavy ropes reserved in a blue ground. The frame is surrounded by a garland of stylised flowers, fruit and foliage. On the sides there are scattered palm-like leaves, and, down the handle, five pairs of horizontal blue stripes. | Format: | text/html | License: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/terms.htm | Publisher: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Rights holder: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Subjects: | tin-glazed earthenware Unknown jug | Temporal: | name=late 15th century; start=1475; end=1500 | Source: | Fitzwilliam Museum | Creator: | The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK | Identifier: | http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/opacdire... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | text/html | Go to resource |
