Description: | Eton Union Workhouse in Albert Street was one of the first workhouses to be built under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The new workhouse replaced a number of smaller, local workhouses, including one in Chalvey. The new building was completed in 1836 at a cost of £4559. It was intended to accommodate 440 people. The Eton Union Workhouse, popularly known as Albert House, underwent several name changes. In the 1930s it was known as the Slough Public Assistance Institution and was run by Buckinghamshire County Council. Emergency Medical Service beds were added in 1940. On Monday 5th July, 1948, responsibility was transferred to the new National Health Service, and the building was renamed Upton Hospital. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Rights holder: | Slough Library | Subjects: | Workhouses ; Hospitals ; Eton Union Workhouse ; Upton Hospital ; Albert House; Eton Poor Law Institution ; Slough Public Assistance Institution ; Birch Tree House | Temporal: | start=2006-01-01; end=2008-02-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Michael Day | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
