Description: | In 1835--6 a brick neo-Norman church designed by W. Scamp of Windsor [Clerk of Works at Windsor Castle], was built to serve as the parish church instead of St. Laurence's, Upton.
In 1876--8 J. O. Scott, architect, began a scheme to enlarge and alter the church to meet the demands of the growing population. The enlarged church was renamed St. Mary's to avoid confusion with the restored church of St.Laurence's at Upton. The work included a new chancel, chancel aisles, one bay of a new nave and a vestry.
In 1907 it was proposed to enlarge the church still further and funds were raised to allow construction to commence in 1911 with J. O. Scott again as the architect. The enlarged nave and a new organ were dedicated in 1912 and the spire was added in 1913. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Rights holder: | Slough Library | Subjects: | St. Mary's Church ; St. Laurence's Church Churches ; Church of England | Temporal: | start=1970-07-01; end=1985-01-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Reg Harrison | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
