Description: | The Rectory, originally known as the Vicarage, was built on glebe land in 1869 and at a cost of £3539 6s. 9d. Of this amount £1600 was obtained by a loan from Queen Anne's Bounty and the loan was not finally paid off until 1900. The house was finished on 29 June 1870 and dedicated by the Bishop of Oxford.
The Vicarage became the Rectory on 20 November 1885 when the chief clergyman of the parish of Upton-cum-Chalvey became a Rector. This process began when Frederick Charsley generously bought up the parish tithes for the church and paid the cost of the Deed of Conveyance. On 2 February 1882 Princess Christian signed the Deed of Conveyance converting the Vicarage into a Rectory and giving the vicar all of the rectoral rights and dues.
In 1920 a new Rectory was built in Albert Street and the old Rectory was then used as offices until 1988 when it was finally demolished. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Rights holder: | Slough Library | Subjects: | Houses Rectory ; Vicarage | Temporal: | start=1869-01-01; end=1988-01-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Reg Harrison | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
