Title: Gateway, Warblington, Hants [Go to resource]
Description: Warblington Castle was a large moated house built by Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury between 1514 and 1526. It was ruined during the Civil War when it was besieged in 1643-4 by Lord Hopton in an attempt to relieve the garrison at Arundel. Colonel Norton had occupied Warblington Castle, owned by the Royalist Cotton family, with a garrison of between 40 and 80 men. The gateway and tower seen here is almost all that was left.
