Description: | A pen and wash drawing of Warnford Park House, more normally called Belmont before the 1840s. This is the 'new' house, so called to distinguish it from the 'old' or St John's House: by 1819, the 'old house' was a picturesque ruin in the grounds of Belmont.
Belmont was probably built by William Neale in the late sixteenth century. The property was sold to the Clanricarde family in 1760, who very substantially altered the house, adding a wing to the north side and extending the servants' quarters. This produced a long oblong house parallel with the River Meon. The property was sold again in 1840, and the new owners again made significant alterations.
The original name of the building was The Place House. When the Clanricardes enclosed the Park, they named this Sanfroy and called the house Belmont (a nice Gothic conceit?).
At the time of the drawing, the house was the property of the 14th Earl of Clanricarde, born at Belmont in December 1802. He later became Ambassador to Russia 1838-40, Postmaster General 1846-52 and Lord Privy Seal 1858. His seat was at Portumna Castle in Ireland.
