Description: | The original house was erected in 1731 by John Sanderson for the 3rd Duke of Bedford. It was said to have been partly demolished by the 4th Duke (1732-71) for fear his successors should prefer it to Woburn. The estate was purchased in 1801 by Sir Francis Baring, Bart, and between 1803 and 1806 the house was encased in neo-classical style by George Dance the Younger in 1803. Dance, a pioneer of the new style, was also responsible for Cranbury Park.
The house was demolished in 1960, leaving only the portico, with its mighty Tuscan columns and pediment. The portico was incorporated into a new house built by Stephen Gardiner and Christopher Knight between 1963 and 1965.
Glimpsed to the right of the house is the tower of All Saints Church. This had been largely rebuilt about 1810 by the first Sir Francis Baring. It was demolished in the 1870s to make way for a new church by T G Jackson.
