Description: | The view is taken from the banks of the largely abortive Southampton and Salisbury Canal, to the east of the canal tunnel under the West Marlands. The tunnel was later converted for railway use, and still forms the exit on the up line from Southampton Central Station.
The most visible buildings beyond the Town Walls are St Michael's Church and, to its left, Southampton Castle. The latter was in its short-lived 'Gothick' phase, an extravagance of the 2nd Marquis of Lansdowne built shortly after 1805 of brick, probably covered with stucco. It was demolished in 1818, shortly after Lansdowne sold the land. Visitors admired the architecture, but thought it situated in a seamy part of the town.
