Description: | The largest mansion in Hampshire. The original house was all but rebuilt between 1842 and 1849 by Sir Charles Barry, architect for the Houses of Parliament, for the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon. It is in the 'Jacobethan' style, and owes much to Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, particularly the angle turrets and the big central tower. To William White in 1859 (History, Gazetteer and Directory of Hampshire, p. 482-3), the house was "an extensive mansion, chiefly of brick, stuccoed, in a modern style of architecture, and more distinguished for elegance than splendour of appearance."
The park was designed by Lancelot Brown, 1774-7, for Henry Herbert, later 1st Earl of Carnarvon. It was extensively planted with Cedars of Lebanon. The park comprised 3000acres.
