Description: | An estate church in Hampshire but, from the style of architecture and its scale, we could be in south London! The church was designed between 1876 and 1878 by Sir Arthur William Blomfield for William Nicholson of Basing Park, for the immense sum of £22,000. Built in the Gothic style, it is a fine flint structure with Doulting stone dressings. Commanding all is the west tower, 160 feet high, with broach spire, three tiers of lucarnes (small openings to let light in) and lancets.
William Nicholson (Liberal MP for Petersfield, 1866-74, 1880-85) made it a condition of employment that all his employees attend Sunday service. He was also responsible for St Peter on the Green at Froxfield.
The church was made redundant in 1975, when the pews and furnishings were removed. An empty shell, it is now in the care of the Redundant Churches Fund.
