Description: | In 1811, Avington was the seat of Earl Temple, eldest son of the Marquis of Buckingham, who obtained it by marriage with Lady Anna Eliza Brydges, heiress of James, last Duke of Chandos. The mansion has connections with Charles II and Nell Gwynn: her Dressing Room was a tourist attraction in the late eighteenth century.
The style of the house dates it to 1705-15 (Pevsner). The centre of the west wing is recessed and filled by a giant portico of wood, with four Tuscan columns and a pediment, based on the pattern for St Paul Covent Garden by Inigo Jones. At the time of the engraving, the house was in the process of being rebuilt, after being largely dismantled by the last Duke of Chandos for the purpose of adding two wings. On his sudden death, the house was left unfinished.
The embattled west tower of the church of St Mary, built 1768-71, is seen far right.
