Description: | Eaglehurst is more generally known as Luttrell's Folly, having been built by Temple Simon Luttrell. It was raised as a prospect house, built on a terrace overlooking the sea. The tower contained banqueting and sitting rooms, fitted up in expensive and splendid style.
Luttrell was an MP (Milborne Port, 1775-80), infamous for his threatening and abusive pamphlets which twice almost led him to a duel. He was a bitter opponent of Lord North and spoke against the conduct of the war against the American colonies. In domestic issues, he argued against the press gang. He was an ally of the Prince of Wales (later George IV), and it is said that he used Eaglehurst as a base for smuggling on behalf of the Regent.
The caption suggests that the tower was, in the early years of the reign of Queen Victoria, proposed as a summer residence for Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII), Princess Alice and Princess Helena. A manuscript note on the engraving has the date 20 April 1844. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Subjects: | building picturesque Eaglehurst Tower prospect house Princess Alice folly Princess Helena Luttrell's Folly Temple Simon Luttrell Prince Regent Prince of Wales | Temporal: | start=1844-01-01; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
