Description: | Metal signs like this were a common form of advertisement in the nineteenth century. This particular example may have produced for the French market - certainly the upper-class soiree that it depicts could almost be a scene from Marcel Proust! Between the Paris exhibition of 1867 until that of 1878 the firm won an average of one medal a year at international exhibitions, including at such exotic locations as Lima and Santiago. The gold medal which it won in 1878 was a great achievement for the firm. In 1867 it felt it had been cheated of its rightful honour, a gold medal. However, in 1878 British biscuit manufacturers petitioned for an Englsih juror on the Paris panel.
