Description: | Huntley & Palmers sales to France declined from £268,000 in 1919 to under £14,500 in 1923. In 1924 they decided to set up a French company in order to avoid poor exchange rates and high tariffs. This was never a very successful venture and the business disappeared with the Second World War. These cards are part of an attempt boost French sales. The range of biscuits advertised by these cards was aimed at children ("Rondes Enfantines, Biscuits pour les Enfants") and each picture card illustrates a nursery rhyme. This particular card illustrates "Sur le pont d'Avignon". As illustrated on the card, the children dance round in a circle, and they also make actions, such as being soldiers, gorillas and dolls.
