Description: | This tin was produced for the coronation of Elizabeth II, though presumably it shows the Queen at Windsor, rather than at Westminster Abbey. Every June the Knights of the Garter gather at Windsor Castle, where new knights take the oath and are invested with the insignia. A lunch is given in the Waterloo Chamber, after which the knights process to a service in St George's Chapel, wearing their blue velvet robes. Presumably this tin commemorates the first occassion on which the Queen presided over such an event, which took place on 5 December 1953. The accession of the Queen in 1952 was sudden, although not entirely unexpected owing to the ill-health of King George VI. The Queen's Coronation followed on 2 June 1953. The coronation was filmed and its broadcast is now recognized as a key moment in the popularization of the medium of television. All around the country people gathered in the houses of friends and relations who were lucky enough to own a set. In this context it is rather odd that this tin chooses to use the 'old fashioned' medium of a sketch, rather than a photograph, to memorialize the event at Windsor. | Format: | image/jpeg | License: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.exe?a=query&p=gateway&f=generic_sitetext%2ehtm&_IXFIRST_=1&_IXMAXHITS_=1&cms_con_core_subtype%3acms_con_text_what=copyright&%3acms_sys_group=%22sopse%22 | Publisher: | Jacob and Co. | Rights holder: | Reading Borough Council (Reading Museum Service) | Subjects: | stairway crown royalty coat of arms belt costume robe | Temporal: | start=1953-01-01; end=1953-12-31; | Source: | Sense of place SE | Creator: | Not known | Identifier: | http://www.sopse.org.uk/ixbin/hixclient.... | Language: | en-GB | Format: | image/jpeg | Go to resource |
