Description: | Fareham Railway Station, built by Thomas Brassey is situated at the junction of West Street and The Avenue (the Titchfield Road). It was opened in 1841 when a line was built linking Eastleigh with Gosport via Fareham. The line, however, had to be closed four days after it opened because the tunnel was thought to be unsafe. It was eventually reopened in February 1842.
The extension of the line to Portsmouth in 1848 required the building of Fareham's seventeen arch viaduct to carry trains across the creek. In 1889, the line was extended to Netley to link up with the Southampton to Netley line. Another line to Alton and London was opened in 1903 but this was closed in February 1955. The Fareham to Gosport line also closed.
