Description: | Pottery was an important clay-based industry of Fareham, particularly the manufacture of the famous Fareham chimney pots. The biggest pottery was the North Hill Potteries, started by the Sandy family in the 19th century. Clay was dug by hand from the clay pits before being transported to the mill, where it would be crushed and pressed ready for the potter's wheel. Mr J Sandy lived in the Potteries between Wickham Road and Old Turnpike. The garden was terraced to make use of the various levels of clay cutting.
