Description: | Situated off the Wickham Road to the north of Fareham, Roche Court was built for Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester in the 13th century and was surrounded by fairly dense forest. Through the years many alterations were made to the building and very little remains of the original house. A block of ancient flint masonry is still standing and this has been incorporated in the present house. Features of various periods can be seen, such as the half timbered gables, the chimneys and the 17th century panelling in the interior. The old windows have been replaced at different times but the house presents an attractive picture in its park like setting.
After the Des Roches, the house and estates passed through marriage to the Brocas family, beginning in 1381 with Sir Bernard Brocas. In 1661, Jane Brocas married Sir William Gardiner and it stayed in the Gardiner family until the death of Sir John Brocas Gardiner in 1868. In the following years, owners have included Mr H F Rawstone and Admiral Sir William De Salis and it has also been used by the navy and as a preparatory school.
