Description: | Newgate Lane leads from the Gosport Road to Peel Common. Until recently it was a quiet undeveloped road with HMS Collingwood being the most important building along its length but in recent years a number of large stores have been built along the road and that, along with the increase of population in Lee on Solent and Stubbington have led to a heavy increase in traffic.
The tram service did not run along Newgate Lane but followed the main Gosport Road from Fareham. It passed the junction of Newgate Lane before continuing on down to Brockhurst.
The Provincial Tramways Co began operations in Portsmouth in 1873 and extended across to Gosport in 1878. Thus Gosport had a horse drawn tram service and when this was electrified in 1906 the line was extended to Fareham, terminating at the railway station. The Fareham route was officially opened for passenger use in January 1906, the fare to Gosport being 4d. The service ran every 15 minutes and ran along the Gosport Road and through Brockhurst. The trams were open topped and there was also very little protection from the weather for the driver. A power station was built at Hoeford to generate the electricity needed for running the tramways. The old trams had cow catchers on the front like the trains of the Wild West. The last tram ran on 31 December 1929 to be replaced by motor buses. Much of the old track still survives, buried under the road surface.
Although Gosport and Fareham Tramways was adopted as a trading name, there was never a company of this title.
The area has changed in recent years with a flyover along Newgate Lane over a large roundabout on the Gosport Road. The houses have been demolished.
