Description: | Fareham Market operated on Mondays at the Market Car Park, originally being a cattle market. The rest of the week, the area was used as a car park and was situated between West Street, Portland Street and the police station. The Market Company was formed by a group of local farmers at the end of the 19th century and was run by the auctioneers Austin & Wyatt. It was originally held outside the old Town Hall in West Street. The shops on West Street include Electronequip, the Leeds, Fads, First Frame and Lloyds Bank. West Street was partly pedestrianised in 1991.The market is being replaced in 2003 with a new shopping precinct and the market has moved to the fully pedestrianised West Street. The Church of the Sacred Heart, a Roman Catholic church was founded in 1873 and re built in 1878. It stands on the corner of Portland Street and the market roundabout.
