Description: | The first market in Fareham was held on Monday, 22 April 1795 and was to be held fortnightly. It is possible that there was an unofficial market before this. The old Market House, later known as Howards House, stood at the end of a row of houses in the middle of West Street, near to the old parish pump and cage or lockup. The animals, usually cattle, sheep and pigs were driven to the market from fields and pounds mainly to the north of town.
They were originally paraded in West Street in front of the old fire station but complaints began due to the chaos this caused. A market company, founded at the end of the 19th century, had purchased land which was to become the market place. It was controlled by Austin & Wyatt. By about 1920 they were immediately put in stalls in the market. Cattle were still being driven through the streets though, and this lasted until WW2. Occasionally an animal escaped causing mayhem in the area. From the market, the animals were sold and sent to the railway station, taken to their new farms, to the abattoir in Portsmouth or the local butchers for slaughtering. Most local butchers closed on Mondays for this reason.
Over the years, the market changed. Apart from cattle, sheep and pigs, there were chickens, rabbits, geese and ducks. Later there were flowers, fruit and vegetables, clothes and household utensils. Finally, it just became a general market.
