Description: | Fareham in the past was an important port trading in coal, bricks and pottery. With a tide rising over 12 ft it was possible for vessels of up to 300 tons to moor at the quays. As the creek silted up and other methods of transport improved, the port became less important.
There are two groups of quays in Fareham with a stretch of foreshore in between, now replaced by a pedestrian walkway. The north or town quay along with the upper wharf was used for coal loading and boat building and the south one or lower quay was used by commercial barges and pleasure boats. There was also a steam flour mill at lower quay for many years. The Fareham Flour Mills Company was built by Thomas Burrell in 1830. It was driven by steam and taken over by the Heasman family towards the end of the 19th century. In their hands it was extensively modernised and became the first building in the town to have electricity. For over 100 years the mill was the centre of the activity at the Lower Quay until it closed in 1960. The first record of boat building goes back to 1403 when the Marie of Fareham was built for Henry 1V.
