Description: | The Post Office has been in various locations around West Street - at Nicholson's the printers, (later Vimpany's), near the High Street which had a post box inside the shop and letters were posted through a hole in the counter. It was also further along West Street opposite Portland Street. This later became the Halifax Building Society. It is now in a purpose built building nearby, still on West Street.
One of the earliest postmasters was Norman Stedman when the post office was open from 8 am to 7 pm. From 1919 until 1925, Mr Welling took over to be replaced by George Jackson who reorganized the towns postal system. He died aged 58 in 1935 and was replaced by Mr E Beck.
