Title: Aerial view of Fareham Creek, 1991 [Go to resource]
Description: Fareham Quay was for many centuries a busy port with vessels bringing in such goods as coal, salt, hides and bark and exporting products of the Fareham area such as timber, leather, bricks, pottery and grain. A ship building industry had begun on the shore of the creek as far back as the 16th century. The port remained prosperous but the gradual silting up of the creek and the improvements in road and rail transport led to a gradual decline and the quay area ceased to be of commercial importance. It was replaced however by pleasure craft. References: 1. Emery, John. 1985. Fareham in old picture postcards, p. 51-53.
