Description: | The Fareham Cycle and Motor Works were owned by E & C Hunt selling such products as Carless Petrol and Pratts Motor Spirit. They also made and sold their own "Swallow " cycles. The business was later taken over by Charlie May who had a cycle business in the High Street for many years. In the 1920's, he began selling motor cycles and wireless sets. May's suffered a setback in 1928 when the shop caught fire and caused over £1,000 worth of damage.
Abrahams were primarily furnishers and cabinet makers but they were also agents for Gilbey's Wines and Spirits and acted as estate agents and auctioneers as well. The business was started by Edmund Abraham in 1827 and then passed to his son William, whose wife Catherine also took an active part in the business. William died in 1907 and Catherine in 1926. However in 1929 when George Abraham was cleaning a shotgun at his Hill Head home, it went off, discharging a shot through his head which killed him instantly. Their business was taken over by Pilcher & Co. Abraham's also had a store known as the Little Dustbin near the bus station in West Street. This was taken over by W H Jeffery & Sons.
