Description: | Military vehicle: registration of leading vehicle is HMT 461. This picture is likely to have been taken on the eve of World War 2 (1939 - 1945).
High Street is still a mixture of shops, offices and private houses. Now a conservation area, it has many fine examples of Georgian houses. Many of the houses have attractive entrance porches and there are many courts and alleys between the houses leading to mews residences. Mrs Melville Lee, the mother of the MP for Fareham, Lord Arthur Lee, lived at St Giles at No 12. No 21 was the birthplace of Sir John Goss. No 69, was originally a School for Young Gentlemen before becoming Wykeham House School. No 70, dating from 1767, Kintyre House is three storeyed with regular Georgian sash windows, parapet, cornice and a fine porch and built of red and blue grey brick. There were also 2 public houses on the street, the Coach and Horses and the Golden Lion. It was also the site, since the 13th century, of the St Peter's Fair or Cheese Fair which was held on 29 - 30 June each year - a boisterous affair as livestock and other commodities were also sold as well as cheese, plus an accompanying fair. The last Fair was held in 1871.
