Description: | High Street is still a mixture of shops, offices and private houses. Now a conservation area, it has many fine examples of Georgian houses. At the turn of the century, there were 35 business premises listed for High Street including shoemakers and dressmakers, a butcher, baker, sweet shop, cycle store and furniture store. Croad's builders yard continued there until fairly recently. It was also the site, since the 13th century, of the St Peter's Fair or Cheese Fair which was held on 29 - 30 June each year - a boisterous affair as livestock and other commodities were also sold as well as cheese, plus an accompanying fair. The last Fair was held in 1871.
