Description: | High Street is still a mixture of shops, offices and private houses. During the early part of the 20th century No 1 High Street was a drapers shop belonging to Montague Warn, also well known for his falsetto voice in the Fareham Male Voice Choir. He also rode a Dursley Pederson Bicycle which had a net hammock and cushion between what would be the seat and handlebars. The shop was later taken over by Frank Kemp, a draper but by the 1930's it was owned by Brighter Homes, who sold wallpaper and paint.
Next were E & C Hunt, the Fareham Cycle Works who sold such products as Carless Petrol and Pratts Motor Spirit. They also made and sold their own "Swallow " cycles. The business was later taken over by Charlie May who had a cycle business in the High Street for many years. In the 1920's, he began selling motor cycles and wireless sets. May's suffered a setback in 1928 when the shop caught fire and
caused over £1,000 worth of damage.
Now a conservation area, it has many fine examples of Georgian houses. It was also the site, since the 13th century, of the St Peter's Fair or Cheese Fair which was held on 29 - 30 June each year - a boisterous affair as livestock and other commodities were also sold as well as cheese, plus an accompanying fair. The last Fair was held in 1871.
