Description: | Fareham had been a flourishing seaport for many years with ship building beginning as well in the 16th century. The area at this time would probably have comprised a small group of cottages, small shipyards and other buildings. By the 17th century the Lower Quay was linked more directly to the town centre when a bridge was built over the Gilly Creek. By 1630 Fareham Creek was thought as good a harbour as Chatham by the navy and later in the century the buildings and stores on the quayside were used as hospitals for the sick and wounded sailors involved in the Dutch Wars. The area of Lower Quay became known as Hospital Yard and the buildings were used again during the Napoleonic Wars. The cottages were the homes of the warders.
The quay area was a very lively one with a pub known as the Drum and Monkey frequented by sailors and smugglers. The excise men were nearby at the Chequers. The upper wharf area of the quay remained unchanged for many years until it was enclosed by Fraser and White who took over the large Georgian house. It was known locally as Itch-y-boo or Hitch-a-bow corner. This whole area was very busy until recently. Also at the upper wharf was the boat building yard of R and A Hamper dating from 1926.
The creek was also the venue for the regatta. Events included sailing and rowing races, swimming and diving competitions and the greasy pole competition held in front of the flour mill. There were processions of decorated and illuminated boats and culminated in a huge bonfire and fireworks on Cams Point.
At high tide the road by the Town Quay and Lower Quay often flooded. Belvoir House, on higher ground across the road from the quay was demolished in the 1930's and Belvoir Close built in its place.
