Description: | East Street led from West Street towards the A27, the main Portsmouth road. At one time it contained shops such as Lusby's Provision Stores and Johnson's, later replaced by Soothill's Corner House Bakery which is still popular today. There were also many fine houses including Burpham House, near Bath Lane and Fareham House set sideways onto the road. This was the home of the Loring family who were connected to the Royal Navy, then the home of Sir Roger Keyes and in the 1930's the home of Doctor Stevenson. Fairfield House which had magnificent grounds and gardens, was pulled down and the piggeries became Cedar Cottage, then Cedar Café and finally replaced by the Cedar Garage. It has now disappeared and blocks of flats are in its place. From here the road slopes steeply down to the River Wallington.
