Description: | Lower Quay in Fareham is situated beside the Gosport Road.
The large mill house at Lower Quay was erected in 1830 by Thomas Burrell and the mill was operated by four pairs of stones driven by a 45 h.p. beam-type steam engine. This method was replaced by roller mills in the 1880's and it was modernised later after being taken over by the Heasman family. The large quayside building was the first to be electrified in the town. The steam mill played an important part in the history of Fareham. Milling ceased in 1960 when Hilton Heasman closed down the mill.
Opposite the mill yard is Prospect House, an attractive early 19th century house of yellow stock bricks with a false window in the centre of the third floor. There are many attractive 18th and 19th century cottages in the area.
