Description: | Eight terraced houses were built at the seaward end of
Crofton Lane at the turn of the last century by the Admiralty on land purchased from Mr Hewitt. They were built to rehouse the coastguard personnel who were living in houses opposite the Post Office in Hill Head Road. Once these houses were completed and the coastguards and their families had moved, the older houses were sold to private buyers. When the new houses were built, the main entry doors were placed away from Crofton Lane. Midway was a much larger building which was a Wash House for the coastguard families. Water came from a nearby well.
Hill Head village has grown considerably since the early 20th century and now has become a residential area virtually joined with neighbouring Stubbington. It is still however a traditional quiet seaside resort complete with beach huts.
