Description: | The buses are named People's Provincial on their sides. Shops opposite the bus station on West Street are Dewhurst, W H Smith in the Savoy Buildings, SBS European Kitchens and Currys. A Telecom van from BT is passing by.
Buses replaced the old tram service between Fareham and Gosport. Cars, at this time, were too expensive for the average person to buy. The last tram ran on 31 December 1929 and the buses that replaced them could increase the number and variety of routes very quickly. During the 1920's, many bus services such as Mallards, Smith Brothers and Tutt's Enterprise grew up in the area competing with the trams and later larger companies took over with Southdown, Hants & Dorset and Provincial being the most important. The bus station was built at the junction of West Street with Portland Street when Thackeray House, once owned by the grandmother of novelist William Thackeray and later a library and reading room was demolished.
